Gargeth Volruun

Gargeth is the one non-dragon character I play close to regularly, even if it is to just move trophy tokens between Myirdroth and him to help ease the labor of multi-classing.

Who Is He?

Gargeth is a wayward "Jerk of All Trades" in training, knowing plenty in the way of many different crafting trades after having acheived Grand Master Crafter, and now is dabbling in some adventure schools. He gets a little help from Myirdroth, an undead dragon he had formed something between a pact and a friendship with long ago.

For the most part he's on the long, slow path of being a spellcaster build with access to heavy armor if I can help it. The end goal is mastery of all 28 adventure classes.

Background

Having grown up in a small town between Mahagra and Kirasanct, Gargeth began as a novice student in healing magic. He wanted to be able to help the other townspeople when they had been injured by the local wildlife. However, while he had done well in mending small wounds, he made a foolish attempt at ressurecting someone who had just died after failing to heal him fast enough. Instead of bringing them back to life, he accidentally brought them back from the dead, as an undead. His fellow townspeople quickly mobbed Gargeth for his mistake, and killed him for creating such an abomination.

As the world went dark, he felt himself falling, and then awoke on Spirit Isle, and the steps of a large marble shrine. This was when he learned he was one of the Gifted, one of the living races with the gift of Life Everlasting (or so it is claimed to be). He no longer felt exhaustion, hunger, or thirst, and he no longer needed to sleep. If it were not for his lively complexion, Gargeth pondered if perhaps he had joined the ranks of the undead instead. His training on Spirit Isle was brief, and after he had moved on to New Trismus.

Gargeth had quickly come to realize that there were some familiar faces from the region he used to live in that also were staying on the small island. Fearing he may be recognized as well, he started wearing masks to hide his face. They were a common sight for many who adventured and wished to protect their face during battle, and so the decision was not questioned. It was here that Gargeth had started to learn more about magic outside of novice healing spells, and quickly grew interested in the realm of spirit magic and other forms that explored the boundaries between life and undeath. He had come to believe that he was a type of undead, and his own liveliness was only skin deep. Perhaps, he thought, undeath was not so taboo as many thought it to be, so long as it looked appealing instead of the usually assumed appearance of a shambling corpse.

Around this time, Gargeth had met Myirdroth, a hatchling dragon who also was going through training on the island. The both of them found a working partnership in each other; Gargeth needed Myirdroth's naturally occurring strength and power to help ease the greater dangers of his studies- namely the local undead and wildlife, and Myirdroth required his skills to get certain items she could not create on her own- namely potions, spell scrolls, and cooked food (dragons in Istaria are incapable of making their own food - or can only recieve benefits from cooked/prepared foods, and must rely on a non-dragon to make it for them). The two became fast friends, nearly inseparable as they made their way through the trials presented by the island of New Trismus. The two of them often spent their times outside of their studies and quests out on the sand bar that sat not far from the island's shore. The patch of sand was secluded, away from prying eyes and ears, and made for good fishing. There he ended up confessing how he accidentally created an undead, and how he came to be Gifted while talking about themselves. It was not long however, before Gargeth learned a startling truth about his draconic friend as well.

Out in the blighted lands beyond the town of New Trismus Square, Gargeth had followed Myirdroth as she lead him somewhere that others would not dare to follow or find them. There he watched as she shed her living appearance, and revealed to him that she was a Pale Hatchling. He soon realized she had not shared this secret with anyone else, his interest in undeath and their close friendship leading to him being chosen as a confidant. He had been shocked, but knew that this partnership would be a boon to his research, and they now were each other's keeper going forward. She knew what had happened that lead to him learning he was Gifted, and he knew she was one of the Pale Hatchlings from the cursed island of Draak. There was no going back or leaving each other now. The two of them were set to be together for the rest of their existences.

Personality

Sassy/Diligent/Hardworking/Cunning/Resourceful/Courageous

Gargeth tends to be a reserved fellow, keeping to himself and focused on his work in researching spirit magic, and on a more low key level, necromancy.

Though he has spent most of his studies relatively safe and with plenty of help (mostly from Myirdroth), Gargeth is something of a hypocrite in that he feels other should work for their goals instead of 'hanging onto another's tail'. He detests the fool and the incapable, prefering his own company or Myirdroth's over others. He has little patience for anyone else, and those who manage to pique his temper may find themselves cursed with a laughing skull growing out of their ribs, or worse. However, if Gargeth thinks that somoene is on the right path, but needs a little nudge, he might slide a potion their way or some advice- albeit bregrudgingly. However, if anyone does think to ask him directly for help, they should expect to have payment ready for his services, and perhaps some snark at their expense.

On the other hand, if Gargeth finds himself in trouble or in need of help, he may tend to rely on his own resourcefulness and cunning to find a way out. If that fails or the situation is too far out of his hands, he will call for Myirdroth to fly in and brute force the problem away

Gargeth tends to find his happiness in cooking, alchemy, and researching magic. Though his favorite activity tends to be joining Myirdroth on a flight when possible.

Relationships

wizard lizard.

Gargeth tends to keep to himself, refusing to allow many others in. But the few he does let in, he tends to keep close, and cares deeply about.

  • Myirdroth

Myirdroth has been a long time friend of Gargeth's, since he had come to New Trismus. In most cases she acts as the muscle for their duo.

Class Mastery

These are the classes I have leveled so far for Gargeth. Istaria's class system allows multi-classing, where a character can swap in and out of classes, preventing them from being stuck in any one role.

Click on a class name to learn a little more about them.
